Science behind back pain

back vertebrae

Our vertebrae consists of annulus fibrous (fibrous rings), and a jelly-like nucleus pulposus, which contains up to 85% water. When disks are loaded the nucleus pulposus is forced to the opposite side of the lean.  This in turn induces compression of the spinal rootlets, which can cause pain.

Also, an incorrect posture exacerbates this problem, with the shift of the centre of gravity (COG). Although, men and women have different locations of the COGs. In an upright position, it shifts forward towards the sternum. To counter-balance the spinal erectors come into play. Because they are parallel to the spine and are located only a short distance away from the axis of rotation they must have the capacity to generate enough force to produce a counter-action. The forces and pressures on the spine are enormous.
