PE-teachers have a non-stop list of tasks to complete, varying from teaching a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities to young people, as well as organising, preparing, supervising and challenging students to take part. On top of that, there are pressures from the latest policies, meeting deadlines, PPA, evaluations, markings, and meetings. There are also breakfast, lunchtime, and after-school clubs and games to run.
In October 2009, the Minister for Children, Schools and Families, Iain Wright explained that the Government is raising the bar on youth sport in the UK in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics. National PE and Sport Strategy for Young People and world class investment ensured that pupils are now doing at least 3 hours of high quality PE and sport each week.
The AQA, the UK's largest exam board, lists Olympic weightlifting in their 2010 prospectus, as an option in athletic activities. As an ex-PE teacher, I would be able to teach as part of the curriculum, or alternatively to coach in a club environment (pre-school, lunch-time or after school).
Currently, I work closely with Newcastle Schools Sport Partnership and coach Olympic Weightlifting in after-schools clubs in several primary and secondary schools. In some primary schools, I also run classroom-based activities designed to raise pulse, deliver more oxygen to the brain and working muscles, aiming to help pupils to better fit in school, and generally feel healthier.
